Career: Published in the journals of the Linnean and Zoological societies, his most important paper was 'On the general geographic distribution of the members of the class aves'; visited America where he travelled on foot and by birch-bark canoe as far as the Mississippi and met leading American naturalists (1856); travelled to North America, to north and south Africa, and to Europe; contributed four volumes to the Catalogue of Birds at the British Museum; improved the financial and scientific affairs of the Zoological Society of London (1859); responsibility for the Zoological Record (founded in 1864) was assumed by the Zoological Society on his initiative (1886); founded Ibis, the journal of the British Ornithologists' Union, which he edited (apart from the years 1865–77) until 1913 (1858); his large collection of nine thousand birds was transferred to the British Museum (1886); elected chairman of the British Ornithologists' Club (1892); described the okapi to western scientists although he never saw one alive (1901); His office at 11 Hanover Square became a meeting place for all naturalists in London, where travellers and residents shared notes with him and he corresponded; his administration of the zoological gardens was subject to mounting criticism prior to his retirement; retired (1902).

Sclater's lemur (Eulemur flavifrons); Dusky-billed parrotlet (the name Psittacula sclateri Gray, 1859, is currently viewed as a subspecies of Forpus modestus Cabanis, 1848); Sclater's monal (Lopophorus sclateri); Erect-crested penguin (Eudyptes sclateri); Ecuadorian cacique (Cacicus sclateri); Mexican chickadee (Poecile sclateri); Bay-vented cotinga (Doliornis sclateri); Sclater's antwren (Myrmotherula sclateri); Sclater's lark (Spizocorys sclateri); Sclater's cassowary (Casuarius sclateri) ... now usually considered conspecific with the Dwarf Cassowary; Colombian longtail snake (Enuliophis sclateri).
