Activity | Education: Manchester grammar school; University of London; Owens College, Manchester (London external BSc); Munich (PhD); London University (DSc) Career: Chemist at the Manchester Gas Department (1882); demonstrator in chemistry under Perkin at Heriot-Watt College, Edinburgh, later assistant professor of chemistry and lecturer in agricultural chemistry (1887); moved to London as chief demonstrator in the chemistry department of the Central Technical College under H. E. Armstrong, where he was also associated with W. J. Pope, M. O. Forster, and Arthur Lapworth (FRS 1910) (1900); published several papers on derivatives of camphor and worked on the stereochemistry of nitrogen; involved in the scheme for preparing some scarce synthetic drugs (1914-1918); appointed to the chair of chemistry at University College, Nottingham (1897-1936).
