Earl Grey Memorial Scholarship to Armstrong College; Earl Grey Fellow, Stockholm University; research into spectroscopy as Commonwealth Fellow, Berkeley, California; Assistant Lecturer, Manchester University (1937-1946); Lecturer, Manchester University (1946-1949); Senior Lecturer, Manchester University (1949-1953); Reader, Manchester University (1953-1955); worked with Sir Clifford Butler (FRS 1961); discovered the Kaon; Emeritus Professor of Physics, Durham University (1955-1973) and established a cosmic ray group; awarded the CV Boys Prize by the Physical Society jointly with Sir Clifford Butler (1956); Second Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Durham University (1967-1969); Pro-Vice-Chancellor (1969-1970); retired (1973); new building for the Physics Department, Durham University, named after him (opened 1997); also has Rochester Lecture (Durham) and Rochester Book Prize (awarded annually, alternately in Durham and Newcastle to the best undergraduate in first year science) named after him
