Activity	Education: Scholarship to Leeds Grammar School; scholarship to read Mathematics at Pembroke College, Cambridge - completed his degree in two years, received a First (1938-1940) Career: War work for Ordnance Board at Cambridge's Mathematical Laboratory; joined Professor Nevill Mott's team at Fort Halsead, near Sevenoaks, Kent for theoretical research on armaments and problems with explosoves (1943-1946); seconded by the Ministry of Supply to the metal physicists under Egon Orowan at CAvendish Laboratory Cambridge(1946-1949); moved to Sheffield to head a new section in the Metal Flow Research Laboratory of the British Iron and Steel Research Federation (2949-1950); moved to Bristol University for a three year research fellowship in department of Physics and Mathematics(1950-1953); Chair in Applied Mathematics at Nottingham University (1953-1962); created a Department of Theoretical Mechanics within the Faculty of Engineering at Nottingham (1960).Elected to a research fellowship at Gonville and Caius College Cambridge (1963-1969) then the university conferred a personal Readership in the Mechanics of Solilds (1969-1972), then appointed a personal professorship (1972).
