Laboratory assistant, working on synthetic production of phenol (1916-1918); worked at Royal Naval Experimental Station (1918); commenced research career at Lister Institute (1925); Biochemist, Serum and Vaccine Department, Lister Institute of Preventative Medicine, Elstree, Hertfordshire (1929); Reader in Biochemistry, Lister Institute London Laboratories (1938-1951), Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry (1951-1968); Honorary Secretary, Biochemical Society (1940-1945); Honorary Secretary, Biological Council (1944-1947); Deputy Director of Lister Institute of Preventative Medicine (1952-1968), Director (1972-1975); with his team at the Lister Institute he completely elucidated the structures of the antigens associated with the ABO, H and Lewis blood group systems and revealed their interrelationships (c1968); retired (1968) but continued to be involved in research
