Assistant to Pierre Weiss, Strasbourg (1928); invented a method of protecting ships from magnetic mines (c 1939); joined University of Grenoble (1940); represented France on the NATO Scientific Committee (1956-1957 and 1960-1980); founded Laboratoire d'Electrostatique et de Physique du Metal, Grenoble (1945, later split into 5 laboratories, 1971), the Magnetism Laboratory being named after him after his retirement (1976); Scientific Advisor to the French navy (from 1952)
