Designed and built the first cryostat whilst at Toronto University (now in the museum, Royal Institution, London); staff, Californian Institute of Technology (1933-1935); went to Cambridge (1935-1947); worked on developing on-board oxygen generators for bombers, and on a variable time fuse for anti-aircraft shells (World War 2); Professor of Natural Philosophy, St Andrews University (1947-1978); Dean of Faculty of Science, St Andrews University (twice); responsible for the creation of a separate Faculty of Science at Dundee; helped to plan a new science complex, St Andrews (opened 1966); Chairman, Very Low Temperature Commission, International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (1966-1969); member, Britsit National Committee for Physics; member, St Andrews music club; commissioned by the Royal Society to design a memorial to Nevil Maskelyne's measuring of Newton's universal gravitational constant "G", unveiled at Braes of Foss, near Loch Rannoch (1983)
