Entered Scots Fusilier Guards (1865); retired as Captain (1870); his first article was published in the Ibis (1869); collected birds, butterflies and moths on his travels; presented his collection of Lepidoptera to the British Museum; later concentrated on collecting plants, including the Galanthus Elwesii, a snowdrop from Smyrna named after him (1874); British representative at the Botanical and Horticultural conferences, Amsterdam (1877) and St Petersburg (1884); scientific member of Embassy to Tibet (1886), which never entered Tibet; co-wrote 'Trees of Great Britain and Ireland' (published 1906-1913)
