Taught mathematics at Trinity; went blind after being struck down by influenza, and learnt to master the braille typewriter and translated a number of mathematical works, devising in so doing methods of braille notation for mathematics diagrams. Established the Embossed Scientific Book fund to support the expense of these publications. Mayor of Cambridge in 1904
