The Royal Society's letter will be used to support applications for funding assistance from the Lottery and other similar organisations. The Lockyer observatory also received letters of support from the Royal Institution and British Association.

In December 2007, the photographic plate collection from the former South Kensington Observatory, including much of Sir Norman Lockyer's work on star spectra, was transferred from the Cambridge Institute of Astronomy to reside with the Lockyer Observatory collection of photographic plates and will be kept alongside the instruments to which these relate. The collections have significance in the history of astrophysics.
