Worked in the department of mineralogy of the British Museum at South Kensington (1882-189); taught crystallography at the Central Technical College (1886-1895); elected to the Waynflete chair of mineralogy at Oxford with a fellowship at Magdalen College (1895); appointed principal of the University of London (1908); Professor of Crystallography at the Victoria University of Manchester (1915–1926); following his retirement he devoted his time to museums as a member of the royal commission (1929-1930).
