Career:
Appointed professor of zoology at the Royal College of Science, Dublin (1880); went to the Torres Strait to study the marine biology of coral reefs, funded by grants from the Royal Irish Academy and the Darwin fund of the Royal Society (1888-9); lectured in physical anthropology at Cambridge (1894–8); organised and led the famous Cambridge anthropological expedition of 1898–9 to the Torres Strait and New Guinea; upon his return from Melanesia, he made further anthropological observations for comparative purposes; university lecturer in ethnology at Cambridge (1900); elected into a fellowship at Christ's College (1901); lectured in London to supplement his income (1904-9); Deputy curator at the Horniman Museum (1902-1915); visited Torres Strait and Papua New Guinea with his daughter, thanks to a grant from the Percy Sladen Trust; undertook education and welfare pursuits with the British army in France (1917); appointed deputy curator of the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology (1920); retired (1925).
