Career:
Published his first New Zealand account of successional changes in vegetation (1899); presented a paper, at the first conference of New Zealand horticulturalists at Dunedin, on the plants of the Chatham Islands and advocated for the establishment of experimental plant research stations in New Zealand (1901); member of the 1907 Sub-Antarctic Islands Scientific Expedition; frequently corresponded with numerous botanists from around the world, facilitating botanical visits there and the publication of New Zealand papers in overseas journals (1926-1928).
