Professor of Mathematics, Marischal College, Aberdeen (1717-1722); visited London (1719, 1721); friend of Martin Folkes (FRS 1714); Tutor to the son of Lord Polwarth, with whom he travelled in France (1722-1724); won the prize offered by the Academie des Sciences (1724); Professor of Mathematics, Edinburgh (1725); organised the defences of Edinburgh against the rebels (1745); when they captured the town he went to stay with Thomas Herring, Archbishop of York; died of a 'dropsy of the belly' from a cold caught on the journey home
