Unpublished letter, regarding geological phenomena and coal formation from James T Dutton to John George Children Dutton shares his conclusions on coal being of 'vegetable origins', formed of 'the crystallised decomposed vegetation of the Antediluvian World'. He makes reference throughout the letter to 'the Deluge', and to specimens supporting his theory; the whereabouts of these specimens are unknown. Dutton also shares observations on sandstone, suggesting that red strata in the rock indicate the presence of iron ore.
