<dc:title>Unpublished manuscript, 'On a peculiarity in the structure of the eye of the Balæna mysticetus' by J A [John Atkinson?] Ransome</dc:title>
<dc:description>Ransome describes his dissection and anatomical study of four eye specimens from the Balaena mysticetus [bowhead whale]. He discovered that two muscles in the eye enable it to switch from a flat shape like that of fish to a convex one like that of quadrupeds in order to see clearly both underwater and out of water.

An ink inscription below the title originally read 'in a letter to Astley Cooper Esq FRS from J A Ransome...', but this was struck out and corrected to 'Communicated by Astley Cooper Esq FRS By J A Ransome'. Graphite corrections and annotations appear throughout.
