Letter from Clements R [Robert] Markham, 21 Eccleston Square, to Dr [Joseph] Larmor Providing further detail on the 'exceptionally late and unfavourable summer' in the Antarctic which prevented the 'Morning' reaching the 'Discovery'. The 'Morning' was 8 miles from the 'Discovery' when it arrived on 23 January, and crews from both ships had to move supplies which took until 2 March. Captain [Robert Falcon] Scott made every effort to free the ship, including using explosives. Aside from some mild sypmptoms of scurvy among sledge parties the crew is generally in excellent health. The 'Morning' was in danger of being detained by the ice west of Beaufort Island on the return journey in March, but was able to get free during a gale. Scott has proposed to name the lands discovered east of the ice barrier 'King Edward VII Land'. 30 April 1903
