Paper, 'An account of two experiments touching the asscent of water in wood ashes ramm'd into a glasse tube, one in common air, the other in vacuo' by Francis Hauksbee Hauksbee shares observations on the ascent of water in ashes of wood in a glass tube. He fills a 32 inch glass tube with the ashes, tying a linen cloth to one end 'to prevent the ashes from falling out'. He uses a 'rammer' to compact the ashes into the tube until the tube is full before placing the linen-covered end of the tube in water and observing the movement of water into the tube.
