Paper, 'An account of a tench tryed in the exhausting engine' by Dr [William] Croon [Croone] Croone details an experiment involving putting a tench in a receiver and exhausting the air within. The tench died, and its bladder was flat and empty. A second experiment was performed by pumping air out, resulting in the bladder becoming distended.
