  <dc:description>Details of a magnetic experiment by Palmer, a mechanic near York. Palmer discusses working at Gilling Castle when Lord Fairfax was attempting to drill into the ground for coals. The workmen broke their drilling rods and brought them to Palmer, who discovered that they had become magnetised as a result of the rock through which they had bored.
