Minutes of a Committee for considering the mode of preventing Contagion without injuring Cotton and Silk Goods Present at the meeting: the President in the chair; Mr Allen; Mr Gilbert Blane; Mr Brande; Mr Combe; Dr George Pearson; Dr Wollaston Minute of the Council meeting of 20 May 1824 appointing the committee was read. ' Resolved, that it is the Opinion of this Committee that Chlorine cannot be employed for the destruction of contagious matter in consequence of its injurious action on Silk and cotton Goods. But that as Sulphurous Acid Gas or the fumes of burning Sulphur do not act thus injuriously, and as Goods may be exposed also without injury to a temperature below 212 degrees the Committee think that exposure to sulphurous acid, or to the above temperature should be tried as means of destroying the contagious matter.
