Letter from Sir Michael Foster, Secretary of the Royal Society, to the Superintendant of the African Protectorate, Foreign Office Informs him that [Sir David] Bruce is returning from Uganda with a report that contains strong evidence that sleeping sickness is due to a parasite, and that it is transmitted by the fly Glossina Palpalis [tsetse]; notes that there is much more work to be done on means of combating it; suggests that a researcher be appointed from the Royal Army Medical Corp be appointed to help Capt Grieg with his investigations; notes that the investigations have revealed much about 'actual and potential causes of disease in animals, domestic and other, and indeed in men, in the form of parasitic organisms'; stresses the continued investigation is 'in the interests of the Empire'. p61. 30 November 1903
