Letter from Cha [Charles] Lyell, Drumkilbo, Meigle, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] Herschel's translation of [Friedrich von] Schiller ['Der Spaziergang'] went to Paris when Lyell went to see the Exhibition and he has just had the chance to read it. He compliments Herschel on his 'elegant & spirited' version, noting that he himself came to German too late in life to master the language, but it is as if written in his own tongue in the dead language [Latin]. He was pleased to hear what had been learnt about meteorites using the spectroscope in the lecture by his son Alexander [Herschel] at Section A [of the British Association]. 7 September 1867
