Letter from M C [Mary Cornwallis] Herschel, Bangalore [Bengaluru], to 'My dear Sir John' [John Frederick William Herschel] John [Herschel] thinks that his father may be interested to see what Colonel [James Francis] Tennant had urged in relation to the metric system in India. She explains why John has not written and how he is making do with three or four hours' sleep, but recently falling asleep at dinner. She gives a brief account of the wedding of a Miss Mein and the Reverend Dr Murphy's attempt on a pun on her name. Colonel [James Thomas] Walker talks of coming to Bangalore, no doubt to see the azimuth circle. The north-east wind has dried gardens and they try to celebrate Christmas. 28 December 1869
