<dc:title>Incomplete letter from [John Herschel], Belgaum, to [Sir John Frederick William Herschel?] </dc:title>
<dc:description>[Commencing with a deletion, then] He left Jamkandi sooner than expected. The Chief is not what they had anticipated. He is generally supposed to have instigated the murder of Mr. Manson, a political agent, in 1858. He was confined for the death, but released due to lack of evidence. He was invested with a shawl thrown over his shoulders by the Governor two years ago, but threw it of in a show of 'insolence'. He was marked for intentional coolness as a result. John's behaviour to him was courteous, but the Chief was not inclined to civility. Mr Shannon is a nonentity and John was 'disgusted with Jamkandi'. </dc:description>
