Letter from John Herschel, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] He returned from Rogers' camp at 10.00am, a trying ride each way which his horse 'Grif' managed well. Mrs Rogers is discontented, weary of camp life and complaining that Malcolm [Rogers] treats her as a younger brother. Herschel notes her sentiments towards him, 'an intemperous man might do a great deal of mischief', but her simplicity will keep her safe from accidental mischief. He describes his visit, including helping Rogers to repair his main instrument and an aneroid. Both of the Rogers are trying to learn Hindustani, the language of the court, while Telingi is spoken locally. Herschel's bricks are being fired and on Saturday he will begin to build. 1 February 1872
