Letter from John Herschel, [station] XXXIII, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] He wonders at the reasons for not receiving a letter from Mary. He has little to tell other than stealing three days by not visiting the middle point, Somtana. It is a small mountain and would throw away labour. He has just completed XXXIII and hopes to come to her soon. He has received a severe rebuke from the Resident at Hyderabad, for freeing two of his men from incarceration at a village during the march. He thinks he has right on his side. He has got his way with the Accountant's Department and Survey Officers' bills will now be paid without demur. He has heard nothing further of the 135 rupees he sent to Ootacamund, but he has applied for money orders for 200 rupees which he will send to her. There should be money at Bangalore for her to draw against if necessary but there may be rent to pay. He may leave a decision to her and he must bring his party back to Bangalore. 12 March 1872
