Letter from John Herschel, Karinja, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] His hurried note went by the same post as his of 2 April and Mary's three letters were from 24th, 26th and 27th March. He thinks that from any point of his new group [for observations] he could get the railway to Coimbatore in three days and eight hours. He has looked at present arrangements and thinks that the work might be done by the 18 or 19 April. He apologises for his replies to her responsive letters, his own are dictated by hurry and restricted movements in camp. It is rare to have peace, and bad for him to be much alone, when thoughtful habits become moroseness. He was unwell at station XXXII. 4 April 1872
