Letter from John Herschel, Badgaon, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] He has to send to the railway station and so writes. He received 2,100 rupees that morning for a cheque he had given up as lost. The railway company has approved his application and has not demurred in anything he asked for. His prospects for travel are not advanced, however, as the weather is unsettled. He worked almost fruitlessly the previous night, observing only ten of thirty stars in transit. He cannot work tranquilly in a high wind, despite knowing that the observatory is strong enough. He has received four Monthly Notices from which it appears he is elected [to the Royal Astronomical Society] but he has not been asked to pay anything and has not been officially notified. 13 [April 1872]
