<dc:title>Letter from William James Herschel, to 'Dear Johnny' [John Herschel]</dc:title>
<dc:description>William has just seen and handled a musket for the first time, having a dozen muskets and ammunition in his possession. Jungipoor is safe location however, and he notes his role as a magistrate, which John has mistaken, since he is only risen in rank. Spencer is still Magistrate there, with William as a Joint Magistrate and Deputy Collector. He had hoped to be an independent magistrate by now, 'but Halliday is bent on keeping a Boy Magistrate down', shutting up appointments as soon as they appear. He apologises for the short letter, as he has spent too much time on the boat writing to Alick [Alexander Stewart Herschel]. </dc:description>
