Commencing 'June 1857. Herschel is only allowed his increased pay from June 17th. As he passed early in April &amp; it was settled in May, this is no better than cheating...'

With extracts from letters [to Mary Waterfield?] of 15 July: 'Herschel has his district in beautiful order'; 1 August, noting that Herschel is neglecting his health; and 28 July, when Waterfield states that Herschel will have difficulty in gaining a magistracy, as 'Buckland the Judicial Secretary hates him &amp; makes no scruple of declaring that any one who wants an appointment has only to apply when Herschel is a candidate in order to have a good chance'.  </dc:description>
