Minutes of an ordinary meeting of the Royal Society ' An Account was given by the Secretary of a Letter written to him by Monsr. Petit ( a Member of the Monmo-rian Academy at Paris) desiring in the Name of the said Academy to be informed from this Society , what had been the transactions of Monsr. Sorbeire amongst them , when he was present at their Meetings ; and in particular whether he had pretended to be by them deputed thither , to establish a Strickter correspondence. whereupon the Company , having declared , that the said Sorbeire had pretended to no such Deputation , not trans=acted any thing with this Society in the Name of the Parisian Academy . Ordered , that the Secretary signify this in his answer to Monsr. Petit . Mr Colwall presented the Company with theAnswer to some of the Inquiries formerly sent by him to the East Indies , and acquainted them withall , that they were so well received in those parts , that they had been sent into all the English Factories there , and Excited them to a curious search and Observation of many other things , of which the Society might in time expect a good Account . Ordered to be enterd . [In margin; Reg. Lib. 2 Fol 210 [313] ] Sir Robert Moray caused to be grought two Bottles well stopped of Thames water formerly sent by him into the East Indies , and returned back ; whichbeing opined had something of the Smell of the Pump-water in Ships . It was recommended to Dr Goddard to make some tryals of it . 1. By wasy of Distillation , to see what Spirit it would yeild ; 2. By approaching a Flame to it , to See whether it would burn . 3. By putting it into the Engin in some glasse-cane to see whether it had as much Air in it as Ordinary water . etc . The same gave an Account of the two Pendulum clocks, sent by Major Homes into the Straights to have returned ; viz that they are presumed to haue gone equally , even in rough Seas ; It was ordered , that the said Clocks , should be recommended again to the same Major Homes , for the reiterating the Experiment in his next Voyage , and that they should be hung crosse . The Account ordered to be Entered . [in margin; Lib. 2 fol 205 [crossed out; Fol. 304]] The Operator produced the Dogge , a peice of whose skin had been cut off and sowed on again ; he related , that as soon as the Skin was cut off , it shrunk into halfe its dimension , so that they could not Stretch it out so far as to cover the whole flesh with it , as it had done afore : but yet it looked , as if it would grow on again . The whole process was ordered to be given in writing by Mr Hook . The Operator produced again the Thermometers with Spirit of Wine , and said that they all did agree at the Figure 8 , it was ordered that one of them should be kept by the Society as a Standard , and all the rest so adjusted as to agree therewith . One of these Thermometers was ordered to be given to Mr Waterhouse , for Mr Childery ; another , to Dr Croon for Dr Power ; a third to the Secretary for Mr Beale . Mr Hook shewed the Company a Hygroscope made of the beard of a wilde Oate ; advancing and returning according to the Drinesse and moysture of the weather . The same produced the Microscopical Observation of a part of a Flye's wing . Dr Wallis's Account of the new way of hatching pigeons , being again taken notice of , Sir Robert Moray related , that the King , when very young , meeting with a Black-birds-nest , and finding but one young one in it , carried it home in the nest , and put it to a Thrush in a Cage , who fed the Blackbird as carefully , as if it had been her owne ; but with this Difference , that , whereas other birds feed their young ones first , before they feed themselves ; the Thrush fed her selfe before the Blackbird . Dr Holder mentioned to have seen Roaches , having Milk and Spawn Dr Ent affirmed that Several Froggs had both milk and Spawne . The President acquainted the Company to have made the Mercurial cylinder stand at 55 inches , with very little water . He promised to pursue the Excperiment . Sir Robert Moray promised to send in a peice of Copper Oare come out of Snowden . And every Member of the Society that had the conveniency , was desired to bring in Oars of Several kinds , to be put into their Repository . Mr Hook was appointed Curator for the engrafting of Feathers upon a Cocks comb , against next day . Mr Clayton produced a kind of Diamond , which being rubbed upon any Gloue or Cloath , did shine in the dark ; and being warmed at a Candle , did glimmer to admiration ' 21 October 1663
