Meteorological observations at Bombay [Mumbai], India, author unknown Two meteorological tables from observations at Bombay [Mumbai]. The first [pp.1-2] is a set of annual tables of a rain gauge readings for the years 1780-1787, usually commencing in May or June of the year and ending in October [monsoon season]. Kept irregularly, but with near-daily observations from 1784. Columns for month, date, and time of readings, rainfall in inches and decimals, totalled at the end of each recording period. The second [p.5] records daily temperature readings at Bombay 1 January-31 December 1788, made at sunrise, meridian sun, and sunset. With a pasted-on sheet [pp.3-4], commencing 'I suppose the author's meaning is that the gauge rod of the vessel...' An inscription below states that 'This is the handwriting of Henry Cavendish Esqr.' Table 1 is headed [in a different hand] [p.1]: 'Diary of the Rain at Bombay from 1780 to 1787'. With an introductory note by the observer: 'N.N. one Inch Graduation on the Scale of the Rain Gauge, is equal to 4 Inches, common measure. Divided into 10 parts - the length of the whole Rod is & Graduated the length of 6 Inches, which is equal to 24 Inches Common Measure'. Table 2 is headed [p.5]: 'Journal of the Heat of the Weather at Bombay by Fares huts Thermometer anno 1778'. Stamped [p.1]: 'Soc. Reg. Lond.' and inscribed in ink 'Presented by Sir Joseph Banks Bart. Pr.R.S., June 24. 1790' Addressed [p.6] to 'Sir Joseph Banks Bart'. 9 July 1780-31 December 1788
