  <dc:description>In October 1839 Sabine and Humphrey Lloyd met Kupffer and other leading figures in magnetic research at a magnetic congress in Gottingen, organised by Guass.  Following on from this meeting, Sabine and Lloyd obtained the co-operation of Russian observatories (through Kupffer) to provide observational data on the Earth's magnetism.</dc:description>
