'An extract from a letter of the Rev Mr John Hellins, formerly Assistant to Mr (now Dr) Maskelyne, the Astronomer-Royal at Greenwich Observatory, to Francis Maseres, Esq' Letter answers Mudge's claim that his father's watch was damaged whilst being tested by Nevil Maskelyne. Thomas Mudge petitioned Parliament after his Father's instrument to determine Longitude was awarded £500. Mudge believed it should have claimed the higher sums offered by the Board of Longitude. c.1792
