Letter from Roderick Impey Murchison to William Buckland Murchison gives an account of Dr [William] Prout and 'fossil sausages'. Prout guided him to chemistry books on the analysis of the faeces of reptiles, which is simply condensed urine. He refers to the South Sea Islands where great quantities of this material is collected by natives as manure and is called 'guano'. Murchison writes that Buckland should have been present to hear [Adam] Sedgwick's invocation to [John] Herschel and the laughter it produced. Murchison has accepted the office of Secretary again, to oblige Sedgwick and to prevent an altercation. He has received a letter from [Charles] Lyell. [February-March 1829?]
