  <dc:description>Before Neumayer’s departure to Australia he tried to visit Sabine at the Woolwich Observatory, however Sabine was in Italy at the time, and therefore he left a letter of introduction. The purpose of the visit was to ascertain advice regarding terrestrial magnetism and intensity observations on board ships. After his arrival in Victoria, Neumayer made a proposal to the colonial government ‘to establish an observatory for the united interest of navigation and the science of terrestrial magnetism. Discusses the importance of a magnetic survey of the ‘colony’ in accordance with Lamont’s principle. Discusses the observations already begun and welcome any instructions Sabine can offer.</dc:description>
