<dc:title>Letter from John Welsh, 19 St John's Grove, Richmond to Edward Sabine</dc:title>
<dc:description>Welsh was sorry to learn of Sabine’s ill health due to a cold and refers to his own ‘severe’ cough. Welsh has the R2 and R6 magnets which arrived on 12th February 1857 in a vibration apparatus along with a nine inch unifilar which is now at Rome. Welsh discusses the whereabouts of magnets and rings that he believes are still in Woolwich. Reference to Captain [Charles] Younghusband’s experiments on R2 and R6 magnets which Welsh suggests can be repeated [at Kew]. Condition of the magnets. Welsh sends a diagram [not enclosed] regarding the deflections of the dip needle by [Johann von] Lamont’s method and horizontal needle, discusses the ‘inductive action of the earth’ diminishing ‘the force of the magnet’.</dc:description>
