  <dc:title>Lending book of the Royal Society Library</dc:title>
  <dc:description>Library lending book volume 4. The manuscript records the following information in columns: date borrowed, title of book, name of borrower - which appears as a signature written  in the borrrower's hand, and a notation that the book has been returned - recorded as 'Ret'd'.  

The borrowers of the books were Fellows of the Royal Society, since the general public did not have access to the library during this period unless given special permission. Borrowers listed include:  Francis Galton, George Gabriel Stokes, Charles Darwin, James Glaisher, Sir Charles Lyell, George Bentham, Lord Rayleigh, Thomas Henry Huxley, Charles Vernon Boys. 

The volume also includes some loose inserts in the form of correspondence, notably a letter from Alicia Boole dated 16 Oct 1889 requesting the loan of some of her father, George Boole's, manuscripts as specified in an enclosed list. This letter can be found at the back of the volume. Other correspondence is interleaved and concerns the return of library books.</dc:description>
