Copy letter from [William] Spottiswoode, President of the Royal Society; to the Secretary of the Treasury [William] Spottiswoode, President of the Royal Society states he now has a better understanding of the Government Grant than he last wrote. States that as things stand, with only 3 applications, the Royal Society will expect there to still be a balance left from the £4000 grant. Assures more applications are expected until the next Committee Meeting in the autumn. States the willingness to forgo the balance of 1881-2 however, as it will not effect the development of science. 17 May 1882
