<dc:title>Printed copy of letter from Sir Clements Markham to Sir William Huggins</dc:title>
<dc:description>Markham states that he will not sign the Instructions for the Antarctic Expedition that call for [John Walter] Gregory to lead a separate landing party. Those signing the Instructions will be ultimately responsible for the fate of Gregory's party, and would have to bear the cost of any relief efforts if the 'Discovery' was unable to return to collect them for any reason. Markham is complementary about Gregory's scientific achievements, but believes he is reckless and has 'the very worst qualities for the leader of a Polar wintering party'.</dc:description>
