<dc:title>Letter from H H [Herbert Hall] Turner, University Observatory, Oxford, to [Joseph] Larmor</dc:title>
<dc:description>Turner has looked at the list of new Fellows [of the Royal Society] and thinks it illustrates the failure of mathematicians to appreciate the difficulties in dealing with masses of observations. [Edward Walter] Maunder's omission means that he is now practically excluded despite making a finding of fundamental importance. Turner compares his case with the similar one of [Samuel Heinrich] Schwabe. He thinks that Maunder may have been excluded because his discussion of his finding was insufficiently mathematical; if so, this is exclusive and has a touch of arrogance. He feels an injustice has been done. </dc:description>
