Letter from J [Joseph] Larmor, 14 Mark Street, Portrush, to 'Dear Master' [Charles Taylor] He is sorry to be late in replying to Taylor's letter. He outlines the objection to Taylor's way of showing the locus of 0 is a conic only. Larmor still thinks that Pascal's theorem is to be preferred. He notes how to prove a result and thinks that a popular textbook runs risks if it is altered, when it has gone through many editions. The extended use of the eccentric circle is very easy and elegant, as Taylor suggests. For elementary use, a separate diagram for each proposition should be as simple as possible, with no superfluous lines. Larmor has no books where he is and cannot reinvent Taylor's mechanical proof on the locus of centre of a conic touching four lines. In a postscript, he describes Bennet as 'very careful in his work' and gives a recommendation for a new edition of Taylor's book. 16 August 1889
