Letter from Herbert Rix, the Royal Society, Burlington House, London, to [George Gabriel] Stokes [Robert] Harrison, the former Secretary of the Transit of Venus Committee, has asked to Rix to hand the enclosed letter [not present] to Stokes. Harrison is a candidate for the Registership of the City and Guilds Institute. Rix gives a short account of Harrison, 'a man of higher principles' who has tact and ability. He was [William] Spottiswoode's private secretary and Rix understands that he helped in Spottiswoode's electrical researches. Spottiswoode advised him to give up the Transit secretaryship to become tutor to Lord Carnarvon's son. He subsequently studied for the bar. Rix hopes he will be successful in his candidature. 15 May 1886
