But he must make his own choice in the matter and being an official of the Royal Society ought not to force him to accept against his own feelings. Geikie's advice would be strongly in favour of Larmor accepting. [Herbert Henry]Asquith has in mind Larmor's scientific reputation, not his secretarial position, although the world would look upon it as an honour for the Royal Society. In Geikie's own case, when Lord Salisbury wrote offering a knighthood, he consulted hisown chief, who said it would not do to decline. 14 June 1909
