Letter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], 2 Grove Park, Liverpool, to [Joseph] Larmor Larmor's paper 'is very nice and Rayleighish'. He sees how the algebra gives a tripling [Zeeman effect] but cannot see why orientation does not matter. He discusses this, asking if it is not more like the Faraday effect than Larmor thought. Larmor does not explain the quadrupling which Lodge sometimes saw. Lodge saw [Albert Abraham] Michelson in America. He had not got the result with a cadmium line, but Lodge explained that he had, the same as with other lines. Michelson's method of examination is difficult and complicated. 19 October 1897
