Letter from Thos H [Thomas Howell] Laby, 31 Talavera Terrace, Wellington, N.Z, [New Zealand], to Sir Joseph Larmor Lyle has resigned his chair at Melbourne and Laby has decided to apply for it. Larmor has helped Laby with advice and he asks for a testimonial of support. He has not been able to give close attention to physics reserach while in New Zealand, but he describes the work that he has done, and notes that the recent equipment and grant from the Royal Society has enabled research with his students. He recalls to Larmor the two papers he published with [Percy William] Burbidge, and experiments which agreed with Schweidler's and Campbell's theory of fluctuations. Laby has also worked with E.O. [Eric Oswald] Hercus on the thermal conductivity of air and he described these experiments, which Callendar thought a good piece of work. He concludes with the work which he did in England on electrolytic conduction and hopes for Larmor's support. 16 July 1914
