Letter from W D [William Davidson] Niven, Royal Naval College, Greenwich, to [Joseph] Larmor He wrote that morning in an offhand way and he hopes that Larmor will be able to follow his remarks. Niven thinks that his own way of solving the functional equations is the least objectionable. The complementary function problem does not strike him so forcibly as it did Larmor. If Larmor thinks it necessary Niven will insert the remarks sent that morning; he left them out as unnecessary when he wrote the paper. The part he has cancelled showing how the integrations may be performed is not a bad piece of work but he looks upon it as superseded by [Hector] Macdonald's proof. He is at a loss, not finding it agreeable to have Macdonald's things tacked on, but he justly deserves the priority. He is disposed to stop short after finding the general expression for the capacity, say nothing on potential and publish as it is without Macdonald's note. Niven has told him to send it to [Robert] Tucker but Council can decide what is to be printed, with Larmor's advice. 8 December 1896
