Letter from Arthur W [William] Rücker, the Royal Society, Burlington House, London, to [Joseph] Larmor Rücker considers that work done by [George Francis] Fitzgerald in the past ten years should be stressed, as Royal Medals are confined to that period. Other work is considered but something material must have been written within that limit. The paper forms the basis of the President's words on presentation of the medal, which is published in Proceedings, so any question of priority must be handled carefully. He compares the 1879 paper to the work of others; Rücker cannot make any suggestion, but if Larmor were to think it desirable to state that Fitzgerald did not quite cover all the ground in an earlier investigation, it would do him no harm. He has directed that his proposals for [John] Kerr and [Augusto] Righi should be forwarded to Larmor for his remarks. He hopes that he has done Righi justice, but was disappointed in his work, especially of the last two years. 18 July 1898
