  <dc:description>The "John Bailey" photographs were made to commemorate the sinking of the RMS Rhone, a packet steamer which sank off the coast of the Virgin Islands in October 1867, after being struck by strong winds.  Of the 197 people on board only 24 survived, Bailey (a cabin boy) being one of them.</dc:description>
